Cultural Healing Exchange

Cultural Healing Exchange 2016

Students from the Toowoomba area recently took part in a cultural healing exchange in the Northern Territory funded by Barkley Regional Arts. Six young people, led by YCLC Engagement Officer Josh Waters and Winangali Infusion Director Buddy Hippi, made the two day trip via bus to Tennant Creek to work with the Elders and youth of the region, and also to take part in the 2016 Desert Harmony Festival. The group, which also included YCLC student Tejay Suey (pictured), spent a total of nine days travelling around visiting schools, youth organisations and health agencies promoting culture and the benefits of positive health and wellbeing. On the final day, the group was invited to dance at a Welcome to Country ceremony in front of a large crowd and Elders of the Warumungu nation. When asked about his experience Tejay Suey stated, “That was such an awesome feeling. I’ve never experienced anything like that before so it was great to learn more about our culture and the culture of other First Nation’s people.”
